UFC 90: Silva vs Cote
Chicago, Illinois - 25/10/2008
Title Fight - Anderson Silva vs Patrick Cote - Middleweight
Every preview of this fight has said the same thing. Anderson Silva, most dominant, unbeatable, knockout power. What can be said about the Brazilian that hasn’t already been said? Most people talk about his unbelievable stand up, but overlook that fact that he has a black belt in BJJ. Or even that he worked in McDonalds. However that’s not really important. The long and short of it is, Patrick Cote will have to pull something very special out of the back in order to beat Silva. Cote lost his first 4 fights in the UFC and won his last 4. The question is, can Silva do what no other fighter has done, and that is knock out Patrick Cote. And vice versa. Can Cote do the seemingly impossible and KO Silva. Despite both men’s tendency to strike, there is every possibility that this could go to the ground.
Josh Koscheck vs Thiago Alves - Welterweight
Due to a rib injury, Diego Sanchez was forced to pull out of his fight with Thiago Alves at UFC 90. Step forward Josh Koscheck. The world class wrestler has only lost two fights inside the Octagon, and one of those was to the current Welterweight champion Georges St Pierre. However "Kos" is coming off the back of a three round DESTRUCTION of Chris Lytle at UFC 86. This being said Alves has won his last 5 fights by TKO in the second round, most recently on his hit list was former Welterweight champ Matt Hughes. Time will tell come October 25th as to whether the winning trend continues.
Thales Leites vs Drew McFedries - Middleweight
Drew McFedries is 3-3 in his UFC career, and none of his fights have left the first round, winning by KO against Alessio Sakara and Marvin Eastman, so on paper he looks to be in good stead coming into his next fight. This would be the case if he wasn’t facing a fighter at the calibre of Thales Leites. Standing at 13-1 in his pro MMA career and 4-1 in the UFC, and holding victories over Pete Sell, Ryan Jensen and a controversial decision victory over Nate Marquardt, Thales is a force to be reckoned with at 185.
Fabricio Werdum vs Junior Dos Santos - Heavyweight
After the mini 4 man tournament for the heavyweight title, many believe that Fabricio Werdum is the next legitimate threat to the belt. The Pride veteran’s defeat list is a who’s who of MMA royalty. Brandon Vera, Alexander Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem and 2 victories over the man who took a shot at Randy Couture for the UFC heavyweight title, Gabriel Gonzaga. Many, including Fabricio, believe that a victory at UFC 90 will secure him a title shot. The man he must beat, is 6-1 Brazillian Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos. A well rounded fighter who has never let a fight go to the judges, stopping all of them before the final bell.
Sean Sherk vs Tyson Griffin - Lightweight
In the first fight of the main card, Sean Sherk starts his climb back to the top following his loss to BJ Penn. The 35 year old wrestler starts at the “bottom” of the ladder with a big step, facing 12-1 Tyson Griffin. Sherk may get a saving grace, as every one of Griffin’s victories in the UFC has come by decision, and with Sherk’s world class conditioning, the further into the fight it goes, the worse for Griffin.
Rich Clementi vs Gray Maynard - Lightweight
Gray Maynard looks to continue his unbeaten streak against the very experienced Rich Clementi. Unfortunately for the Las Vegas native, Rich Clementi is unbeaten in his last 4 fights. Beating world class opponents such as Sam Stout, Melvin Guillard and England’s own Terry Etim.
Spencer Fisher vs Shannon Guggerty - Lightweight
Spencer Fisher looks to celebrate his tenth fight inside the Octagon with a victory against Shanon Guggerty. Shannon has only had one fight in the UFC, earning a round one submission victory against Dale Hartt at UFC: Silva vs Irvin. This is quite a contrast to Fisher’s three year UFC career. With victories over Sam Stout, Matt Wiman and UFC welterweight contender Thiago Alves.
Hermes Franca vs Marcus Aurelio - Lightweight
Marcus Aurelio will need to pull something special out of the bag to take his UFC record past 2-2, as his opponent is 5 year UFC veteran Hermes Franca. The three time WEC champion had his UFC title shot against Sean Sherk but fell short with a decision loss.
Josh Burkman vs Pete Sell - Welterweight
The fight to open up UFC 90 will be Josh Burkman vs Pete Sell. Sell will be feeling the pressure coming into this fight, having lost his last 4 fights in the UFC..
