UFC 87 – Seek and Destroy

Not two weeks away, UFC 87 will see three fights that could sell a PPV event on their own. GSP vs Jon Fitch, Brock Lesnar vs Heath Herring and Kenny Florian vs Roger Huerta. With 6 extremely entertaining fighters in the top 3 fights, could UFC 87 be the UFC's biggest event to date?

Main Card

Georges St Pierre vs Kenny Florian: Welterweight

Georges St Pierre’s latest challenge comes in the shape of Jon Fitch who is unbeaten inside The Octagon. Fitch holds victories over Diego Sanchez, Roan Carneiro and a TKO victory over Thiago Alves. Despite Fitch’s main strength being wrestling, he doesn’t possess a skill set that rivals that of St Pierre, who has outwrestled every wrestler he’s came across including Frank Trigg, Sean Sherk and even Matt Hughes. I would imagine GSP would attempt to take Fitch down and control him on the ground, causing damage with his ground and pound, but never looking past a submission attempt. That’s not to say Fitch doesn’t stand a chance, however a lot of people are looking past Fitch and talking about GSP’s next title defence.

Brock Lesnar vs Heath Herring: Heavyweight

The Brock Lesnar vs Heath Herring match is sure to be a mammoth power struggle, with both men weighing in at a combined weight of 515lb. Despite his veteran status and unbelievable toughness, Herring is considered by many to be the underdog in this fight. Lesnar’s weight and wrestling advantage has given him the edge in many people’s opinion. However if Herring can put Lesnar on his back and deliver some damaging knees like he did against Cheick Kongo, he may take the fight. It was reported recently that Heath Herring’s cardio and conditioning was vastly improved thanks to help from people such as Tony Apante, however Lesnar has neither been taken into the late rounds, or had his chin tested, this may be the best match up style wise for Lesnar to make his mark, or the worst.

Kenny Florian vs Roger Huerta: Lightweight

Kenny Florian takes on a big challenge in Roger Huerta on August 9th. Past Sherk, this very well may be the biggest challenge to date for the Mark DellaGrotte trained fighter. KenFlo’s unreal jiu-jitsu and dangerous striking could pose a problem for Huerta, but “El Matador” has never been one to lose his composure and crack under the pressure.
