Georges St. Pierre grinds down Alves to take unanimous decision victory
The welterweight championship match up between current champ Georges St. Pierre and number one contender Thiago Alves had all the makings of a “Fight if the Year”, but despite falling short of all of the bells and whistles, GSP put on a clinic.
The first round saw not a lot of damage done, but Georges St Pierre took Alves down with relative ease. The second round saw Georges follow suit, taking Alves down, but this time spending most of the round grinding down his opponent, bloodying the Brazilian up. As the fight went on, Alves landed leg kicks and punches, but nothing of any significance and not a lot more than St. Pierre was throwing. During the fourth round, GSP took his opponent down, but due to a reversal on behalf of Alves, the Brazilian was able to do some damage of his own.
Once the poor got back to their feet, the fight followed much the same tone, with Alves struggling to pull the trigger and utilise his devastating power. An impressive display of controlled aggression from Georges St. Pierre that lead to a unanimous decision victory.
