Five time UFC champion, Randy “The Natural” Couture has said his Xtreme Couture training partner, Vitor Belfort has a great chance to pull off the upset against WAMMA heavyweight champion, Fedor Emelianenko if the tow are paired up in the main event of Affliction: Trilogy next weekend.
Speaking to Real Fighter magazine contributor Sacha Feinman, Couture said:
“Vitor has always been tremendously talented, and he's always had a ton of gifts. It's just a matter of putting him in the right environment to let them flourish.”
“The fact that he's a southpaw and Fedor hasn't prepared for a southpaw, the fact that he is very, very agile and explosive and a great boxer all lend well to him having a great performance. It's really a win-win for Vitor to fight one of the top guys in the sport, being a smaller guy stepping up on such short notice. … He's got just as good a chance as anybody. Certainly he has as good a chance as Barnett had at fighting Fedor.”
Affliction are yet to confirm who will step in for the disgraced Josh Barnett in the main event at Affliction: Trilogy just eight days away. With Jeff Monson, “King” Mo and Don Frye amongst the names to put themselves forward to face the Russian, it is still possible that Belfort will not get the nod.
