The Evolution of Mixed Martial Arts

The Evolution of Mixed Martial Arts

Remember the days when Royce Gracie’s BJJ would submit any fighter, or Tito Ortiz’ ground and pound determined the fate of any opponent in the octagon, or when “The Iceman” Chuck Liddell was proclaimed to be the crème of the crop of MMA; now that belief has become a mere thought. Due to younger and more diverse styled fighters like Jose Aldo, Dominick Cruz and Jon Jones, who appear to control their division, perhaps other weight divisions if the competition dose not decided to move with this wave of hybrid styled fighters. The first class of MMA fighters whom appeared to be invincible with one set of dominating fighting skill, have become instinct due to their inability to compete with fighters like Jon Jones who have established their own fighting styles to defeat one dimensional fighters and versatile fighters who set foot in the octagon. These type of fighters are proving to be the future of MMA. … Continue Reading

What will we be talking about in 2013?

A New Year is always full of so much potential and 2013 could be the best year in MMA history. There’s no way of knowing what the biggest stories of the year will be but that doesn’t mean I won’t have a guess. Will we see some of the super fights we’ve been talking about for years or will they get bogged down with odd match-making? What does the future hold for Bellator FC? And how big can Women’s MMA become? Here are my thoughts on the biggest story lines as the mixed martial arts year really gets started. Enjoy. … Continue Reading

Random thoughts following UFC on FOX 5

Random thoughts following UFC on FOX 5

UFC on FOX 5 was one of the most talked about fight cards of the year before it even happened. In the main event UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson dominated Nate Diaz in shockingly easy fashion. Alexander Gustafsson and Rory MacDonald both lived up to the hype by defeating former champions ‘Shogun’ Rua and B.J Penn. And Matt Brown flattened Mike Swick moving to 4-0 in 2012. Now that we’ve all had some time to really think about what we saw here are some of my thoughts on the bigger and smaller stories that emerged following last weekend’s show. Check it out! … Continue Reading

Will 2013 be the year of the Superfight?

Will 2013 be the year of the Superfight?

It’s fair to say that 2012 has been a mixed year for mixed martial arts. Fighter injuries have cost us fights like Georges St. Pierre vs. Nick Diaz, Dominick Cruz vs. Urijah Faber III and Jon Jones vs. Dan Henderson to name but a few. TRT has been an on-going controversy which is only now beginning to die down. We’ve even seen a UFC card cancelled (oh and two Strikeforce cards but no-one cares about them anymore). That said we’ve seen our fair share of huge fights too. The Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans match-up was finally made after a yearlong wait and Anderson Silva vs. Chael SonnenII became one of the biggest fights in the history of the sport after two years of false starts. We’ve also seen the first ever UFC flyweight champion and the emergence of Ronda Rousey as the world’s best female fighter. … Continue Reading

Maybe we should cut Anderson Silva some slack

Maybe we should cut Anderson Silva some slack

I’m going to guess that some of you took one look at the title of this article and only clicked on it to comment on what an idiot I am. Well before you do that how about giving this article a look before you make up your mind. It seems as though these days it’s a very popular thing to rag on the world’s best fighters and Anderson Silva gets a lot of it these days. That’s not all surprising considering that Silva is the best fighter in the world right now but in a lot of ways Silva is everything you could want in a champion. He’s a dynamic striker who regularly finishes fights against the best fighters in his division, ok he’s not always the friendliest guy at the press conferences and his English isn’t that great. But he’s a professional fighter not your new best mate; he doesn’t have to do everything we want. The problem is that no matter what he does he seems to be criticised for it. … Continue Reading

How can Demitrious Johnson and the lighter weight fighters avoid the fate of the lighter boxers?

How can Demitrious Johnson and the lighter weight fighters avoid the fate of the lighter boxers?

Chris John. Toshiaki Nishioka. Yuriorkis Gamboa. Nonito Donaire. These are just a few names that probably won’t mean anything to most of you but if you’re a boxing fan they really should. They are in fact some of boxing’s top fighters at junior featherweight and featherweight. They have been at the top of their divisions for the last few years now and they are all in the top twenty of the pound-for-pound rankings. Yet despite their success the mainstream fight fans still don’t really know who they are.  That’s not surprising considering that the lighter weight classes traditionally don’t bring in big money but that doesn’t stop it from being quite sad that some of the world’s top fighters get over looked because they’re in the wrong weight classes. … Continue Reading

The Benefits of Whey Protein in MMA

The Benefits of Whey Protein in MMA

Training for a fight is a lot more difficult than you might think.  Everyone knows that you have to be determined and supremely fit to even go through a training camp but it’s easy to forget that no human can go through those regiments without protein supplements. Whey protein is used by fighters like former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber to help recover after training (this isn’t an advert for Whey protein by the way). A fighter burns up all the protein in their bodies during a workout and Whey protein is designed to replace that protein quickly. This prevents the fighter’s body from burning lean muscle mass. It has been purposely designed to be rapidly absorbed by the digestive system allowing the amino acids to reach the users muscles. It allows for increased strength and speed during training and reduced recovery time after training. The supplement is perfectly legal in the sport and you can purchase it at any Holland and Barrett or most other online venders (or don’t because this isn’t an advert, have some crisps I don’t care). … Continue Reading

How unhealthy is weight cutting?

September 10, 2012 All MMA News, Blogs  Comments
How unhealthy is weight cutting?

It’s fair to say that weight cutting is an art in itself when it comes to MMA. If a fighter cuts too much weight they will be too drained to fight at their best, if they don’t cut enough they can find themselves at a strength disadvantage. Finding a happy middle ground is not always possible.  Some fighters don’t do themselves any favours, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson is notorious for putting on huge amounts of weight between fights. Unsurprisingly some fighters need a little extra help cutting those last few pounds. Former women’s featherweight champion Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Santos was caught using stanozolol, a steroid commonly used in bodybuilding, which allows the user to maintain muscle mass while still losing fat.  Steroid abuse may be unhealthy but then weight cutting in general is unhealthy. It can cause kidney failure and heart attacks due to the strain it puts on fighter’s bodies. … Continue Reading

Is Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar pointless, great or a super fight?

Is Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar pointless, great or a super fight?

It’s safe to say that the injury issue the UFC has been experiencing over the last year or so has cost us a lot of big fights this year. From Jon Jones vs. Dan Henderson to Georges St. Pierre vs. Nick Diaz, 2012 has been a bad year to be Joe Silva or Dana White. But for once the injury bug has worked in their favour as UFC featherweight title contender Erick Koch was forced to withdraw from his scheduled bout with champion Jose Aldo last week.  As a result of this Jose Aldo will now face former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar on October 13th in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the UFC featherweight title. It’s a fight that most of us wanted for a long time because this could be the greatest test of Aldo’s career and Edgar’s opportunity to reinvent himself at a lower weight. When the fight was announced fans and media went nuts for it and many were happy to call it a super fight. … Continue Reading

Who Killed UFC 151?

Well it would seem that the Mayans were right all along, the world actually came to an end last night with the announcement that UFC 151 has been cancelled. Yes the sky is still above us and the ground is still beneath us but I assure you the world did end. Well ok it didn’t, but you would think it did if you listened to UFC President. Dana White’s rant on the conference call announcing the shows demise. Then again Dana’s always pissed off with something these days. To be fair it was a pretty big shock to the MMA world. Usually the UFC is so good at finding replacement fights that no-one would have guessed that an entire show would get cancelled. … Continue Reading

Despite his success Frankie Edgar is better off at featherweight

Despite his success Frankie Edgar is better off at featherweight

In the early hours of Sunday morning Frankie Edgar appeared in the eyes of most observers to have reclaimed his lightweight title. The fans thought he won, the media thought he won and other fighters thought he won. The judges didn’t. It’s worth saying that while the decision was questionable it was not ridiculous. Edgar clearly lost the first round and rounds three, four and five were all close. So a score of three rounds to two score in favour of Benson Henderson is definitely a possible outcome even if it isn’t the most popular one. Regardless of how it was scored Edgar’s performance was excellent and he deserves all the praise and respect he has received since. It’s amazing to think back to UFC 112 when no-one believed he was capable of such performances. Now he’s considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. That said following his second straight loss in Lightweight title fights the calls for him to drop to featherweight will only get louder. … Continue Reading

Can You Have Too much of a Good Thing?

Can You Have Too much of a Good Thing?

UFC 149 can be summed up with one word, disappointing. It’s fair to say that most of us weren’t expecting much of the main card considering how many of the original fights were cancelled due to injury but I don’t think we realised just how forgettable it would be. It wasn’t all bad, the undercard was great and the Matt Riddle vs. Chris Clements fight that opened the pay-per-view was absolutely fantastic. I remember looking through twitter and reading comments from journalists and fans that suddenly had high hopes for UFC 149. Then things started to go downhill. … Continue Reading

Anderson Silva vs. Jon Jones Shouldn’t Happen!

Anderson Silva vs. Jon Jones Shouldn’t Happen!

I was just casually perusing through MMABay the other day when I saw an article called Anderson Silva’s manager says the only fight that makes sense is Georges St. Pierre. I have to say that I completely disagree with Jorge Guimaraes’ statement given the number of high level middleweights who are on win streaks at the moment. Chris Weidman’s incredible knockout of Mark Munoz surely entitles him to a number one contenders match if not a title fight. Tim Boetsch may not have looked great in last fight against Hector Lombard but it was his fifth win in a row. There are also two big middleweight matchups featuring Michael Bisping and Brian Stann on September 22nd and Vitor Belfort and Alan Belcher on October 13th, both could have future title implications. And former UFC light-heavyweight champion Rashad Evans has been contemplating a move down in weight to face Silva. … Continue Reading

How Do We Keep The Championship Going If The Champion Can’t Fight?

How Do We Keep The Championship Going If The Champion Can’t Fight?

So you have probably heard by now that we have a new UFC interim bantamweight champion, Renan Barao, following his dominant performance over Urijah Faber. From here there are two potential alternatives. Either the winner will wait it out for the rest of the year in the hope that the real champion Dominick Cruz will make a quick recovery or they could defend their belt against someone like Michael McDonald or Mike Easton. Barao told us before the fight that he would prefer to wait for Cruz to return but at the post fight press conference he said he would defend his belt if he was asked to. Is he just telling us what we want to hear or does he mean it? … Continue Reading

Can Nate Marquardt be Redeemed?

Can Nate Marquardt be Redeemed?

This past weekend saw the return of controversial MMA fighter Nate “The Great” Marquardt to competition for the first time since March 19, 2011. Marquardt has since then lost his UFC contract due to elevated testosterone levels, which forced his withdrawal on weigh in day for his UFC on Versus 4 bout with Rick Story which was to be his Welterweight debut. After a public humiliation regarding steroid abuse allegations, some coming from his then former boss in Dana White, Nate faced the music on The MMA Hour about why he elected to take Testosterone Replacement Therapy. Nate stated he had applied and received exemption, however at the time of the test his testosterone count was outside mandated levels. He was tested after his removal from the bout, on fight day and was within the levels; therefore his suspension was lifted by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission. … Continue Reading
