Blog-o-plata: And so it begins – MMA pioneer diagnosed with brain damage

When opponents of MMA criticise its brutality, one defence the community has always had to fall back on is its safety record. Deaths as a direct result of MMA bouts are few and far between, and we’re quick to point out the multiple in-ring deaths of boxers each year, along with the long line of broke, punch-drunk and brain damaged veterans of the sweet science. Well sorry folks, we can’t play that card anymore. The harsh reality of head trauma is about to hit the MMA world. … Continue Reading

MMABay Hands On: UFC Undisputed 3 Career Mode

MMABay Hands On: UFC Undisputed 3 Career Mode

Videogames may be more and more focused on online play these days, but in MMABay’s opinion you can’t beat a good career mode. That’s especially true of our beloved MMA/boxing games, after all, who doesn’t want to mould their own fighter and take him to championship glory? After the disappointment of UFC 2010’s career mode and the solid – yet basic – effort put in by EA MMA, all eyes were on THQ to deliver the ultimate MMA career experience with Undisputed 3. MMABay was about to find out if they were up to the task… … Continue Reading

Blog-O-Plata: The Final Count-down?

Blog-O-Plata: The Final Count-down?

Sometimes an opportunity arises that is simply too good to pass up on. But chances inherently contain a measure of risk; the question then becomes one of risk versus reward. Michael ‘The Count’ Bisping was recently presented with such a dilemma; take the path of least resistance to the UFC gold, or throw himself headfirst at a Chael Sonnen-shaped roadblock for an instant title opportunity. We all know which option Bisping took, but was it the right move, or will he live to regret it? … Continue Reading

MMABay Film Review: Haywire, staring Gina Carano

On Tuesday night in London, England, MMABay was invited to a top secret preview screening of ‘Haywire’ alongside the great and the good of UK MMA. MMA stars have had mixed success in movies ranging from the good (Randy Couture in The Expendables), to the bad (Randy Couture in Scorpion King 2) and the terrible (Kimbo Slice in Scorpion King 3, and everyone in Never Surrender). Would Gina Carano outdo them all? MMABay was about to find out… … Continue Reading

Blog-O-Plata: Fighting Chris Leben’s corner

On Monday 28th of November, the UFC released the news that middleweight mainstay Chris Leben had failed his UFC 138 post-fight drug screening. It is his second offence and has landed him a 12 month ban. It’s easy to label Chris a ‘drugs cheat’ – easy and accurate. But there’s a bigger issue at hand; not that Leben took a banned substance, but why? … Continue Reading

The dust has settled on UFC on Fox, and many a question has been left in its wake. How will Junior Dos Santos rank amongst MMA’s all-time elite? What will become of fallen champion Cain Velasquez? While these vanilla topics are debated by all and sundry, leave it to the Blog-O-Plata to get down to the nitty-gritty and tackle the real burning issue at hand: Could Iron Jez KO a cow? … Continue Reading

Blog-O-Plata: UFC on Fox – Why it has to work

Remember where you were this coming Saturday night at 9pm ET (2am in the UK), for you will bear witness to a seminal moment in the history of our young sport. Up there with the birth of the Unified Rules, the Ultimate Fighter classic between Griffin and Bonnar and the purchase of PRIDE by Zuffa, Saturday’s debut of ‘UFC on Fox’ has the potential to bring about the winds of change in mixed martial arts. If it works, it’ll be a game-changer; here’s why failure is not an option. … Continue Reading

Blog-O-Plata: Medical Matters – Should fighters ask for handouts?

Blog-O-Plata: Medical Matters – Should fighters ask for handouts?

The UFC can be criticised for many things, but you have to hand it to them when it comes to the comprehensive health insurance policy the organisation rolled out earlier this year. The coverage, which takes care of any and all injuries and accidents, both in the cage and out of competition, is one of the most progressive moves in the short history of MMA. But what of those outside the ZUFFA umbrella? What of Bellator champion Zoila Gurgel, who this week has asked fans to foot a $5,000 medical bill? … Continue Reading

Blog-O-Plata: Can K-1 save the 2011 World Grand Prix?

With just two weeks to go until their proposed World Grand Prix 2011 Elimination round, cash-strapped kickboxing giants K-1 have reportedly offered settlements to a number of fighters in a last-gasp effort to secure their participation. While the  news will come as a welcome surprise to several top names, including current champion Alistair Overeem, who have publicly stated that they are owed to the tune of six figures, there’s a catch: They’ll only get 50% of what they’re due…  … Continue Reading

Blog-O-Plata – And What About Gegard Mousasi?

Blog-O-Plata – And What About Gegard Mousasi?

It seems like a distant universe when fight critics and fans alike were looking outside the UFC for great fighters. In that search, three names stood out among the rest: Alistair Overeem, Fedor Emelianenko, and Gegard Mousasi. We know that Overeem has been canned by Zuffa for many different reasons (management, injuries leading to lack of work, etc…). Emelianenko has been cut for failing to win in Strikeforce. Mousasi meanwhile keeps winning on the outside of either the UFC or Strikeforce, but he keeps getting pitted against lower-level talent. All of which he destroys. With only one loss in the last 5 years, he seems to be a better candidate than say a Tito Ortiz to determine who fights for a title, right? … Continue Reading

Blog-O-Plata – Tito Ortiz: A Matter of Respect

Blog-O-Plata – Tito Ortiz: A Matter of Respect

Time is indeed a cruel mistress and nobody in the mixed martial arts world knows that better than Jacob Christopher ‘Tito’ Ortiz. The years have been unkind to Tito, once the poster child for an emerging sport, more recently reduced to a figure of tabloid fun and a shell of the fighter he used to be. After all that’s been and gone, is it still possible to respect ‘The Huntington Beach Bad Boy’? … Continue Reading
