Joe Lauzon

Joe Lauzon Interview

Hi Joe,

Thank you for taking the time to sit down with MMABay and answer a few of our questions:

MMABay - You've announced that your return to the Octagon from ACL surgery in March will be at UFC 108 in January against Sam Stout. How did this come about? Were you given a few names to choose from or were you just offered Stout?

Joe Lauzon - I asked for Stout. They gave me a list of guys and I thought he would make a good fight.

MMABay - From following you on Twitter and through your website i know you've been itching to get back to fighting, so how long did it take for you to accept this fight?

Joe Lauzon - It was more like me harassing Joe Silva asking for who he was thinking about and then he asked me for someone that I wanted. I told him I thought a fight with Sam would be good and he made it happen.

MMABay - Stout was supposed to fight Phillipe Nover at UFC Fight Night 19 a few weeks ago but that was cancelled due to a seizure suffered by Nover on the day of the fight. With Stout having already had a full training camp, do you think this gives him an advantage over you because he will be extra sharp with so much preparation time or do you think he could have overtrained?

Joe Lauzon - He has the advantage of being sharp from being in camp. I have the advantage of being fresh and injury free. There are up sides to both.

MMABay - When you step back into the Octagon in January it will be your first time in almost eleven months. Will 'ring rust' be a factor for you?

Joe Lauzon - This is the longest layoff I have ever had by far, but I don't expect any ring rust. I will have shaken all of that off in the gym and with hard sparring and training. Nerves don't really get to me which I think is where most ring rust comes from.

MMABay - You injured your ACL or 'Anterior Cruciate Ligament'. Could you explain the specifics of the injury and the surgery involved to fix this?

Joe Lauzon - In a nut shell, your ACL holds the upper and lower part of your knee together. They basically took a ligament from a cadaver body and attached it to two pieces of bone and then screwed those pieces of bone into my leg to make it hold. Over time, the screws will go away and the bone will fuze.

MMABay - A fight i would love to see would be you against Kenny Florian again. The first time you guys fought Kenny won via TKO in the second round. Is avenging your losses something that interests you and if so, is a rematch with Kenny something you will be actively seeking if you beat Sam Stout?

Joe Lauzon - Thats the fight that I will be at the top of my list for a while. It wasn't a good first fight back, but as soon as I am in position to fight Kenny again, I definitely want it.

MMABay - Chuck Liddell is currently appearing on 'Dancing With The Stars' and doing a great job showcasing MMA to a wider audience. I notice you have been supporting him through Twitter, would you consider doing the show if you were asked? Or any other 'Reality TV' show for that matter....?

Joe Lauzon - Not Dancing with the Stars, hah, but maybe something else. I was on The Ultimate Fighter so I had a taste of TV... but it would depend on the show if I would do it or not.

MMABay - You've probably been asked this a lot recently, but how would you feel about fighting your brother Dan now that you are both under contract with the UFC? Would you do it and is this something you guys have talked about before?

Joe Lauzon - We have talked about it and we would do it. The tough part would be the training issues... we train with the same coaches and the same partners. We would have no problem actually fighting each other, but training and everything would be tough. I am not even sure an athletic commission would allow it.

MMABay - Thanks for answering these question Joe and good luck against Sam Stout at UFC 108. Are there any sponsors you’d like to thank before we finish?

Joe Lauzon - Sprawl Fight Shorts, Tri-Coasta, MMA Warehouse, Fight Dentist... and check out my school if you are in the Bridgewater Area... LauzonMMA.com

And follow me on Twitter! twitter.com/joelauzon

Thanks!
