Sean Sherk

Sean Sherk Interview

MMABay sat down this week with former UFC lightweight champion, Sean “The Muscle Shark” Sherk ahead of his UFC 98 clash with Frankie Edgar on May 23rd. We asked him for his thoughts on his fight, the increased greasing-up in the sport and about his training partner, UFC heavyweight champion, Brock Lesnar.

In the interview Sherk commented on the increased greasing-up in the sport that’s been noticed (namely Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva), saying:

“I think it’s been around for a long time, its just nobody really took any notice. A lot of fighters have fought guys with grease on them before and they’ve never said anything about it until recently when fighters really started making an issue out of it.”

“If you get two evenly matched guys and one of them has grease all over them, it’s an advantage, it’s an advantage for the other guy. If you can't grab on to somebody, if you can’t hold onto somebody then that kinda sucks.”

“Like I said, I think it’s been around for a while, nobody really made an issue out of it till recently, now everyone’s watching for it and you’re starting to see it. I think it will make its way out and guys will probably find different ways to oil themselves up before fights.”

On UFC heavyweight champion, Brock Lesnar’s preparations ahead on his UFC 100 clash with Frank Mir, Sherk revealed:

“His Jiu-Jitsu game has just got phenomenally good. Offensively his Jiu-Jitsu has got good but defensively he’s made some leaps and bounds as far as submissions go. He’s bringing in the best guys he can possibly find to train with and roll with and drill with on a regular basis. The guys a great athlete, he’s learned this game real fast and I think the fight with Frank Mir is going to be a different fight than it was the first time round.”
