Jon Fitch
Jon Fitch Interview
MMABay sat down this week with former UFC welterweight number one contender Jon Fitch ahead of his UFC 100 clash with tricky Brazilian, Paulo Thiago. Was asked him whether he had learned anything from Thiago’s last fight against his American Kickboxing Academy team mate, Josh Koscheck, what its like training with the likes of Velasquez and Swick and his prediction for the fight between two of his past opponents, Georges St. Pierre and Thiago Alves.
Quotes from the interview:
We asked him whether he’s been able to gauge Paulo Thiago ahead of UFC 100:
“Yeah there’s not a lot you can get out of that fight with Koscheck other than that he’s dangerous and you can’t really give him space, you can’t open yourself up and make mistakes. I have found some video’s online of him and some of his fights and the biggest assessment I can make of him is he’s a very scrappy fighter, he comes pretty hard so knowing that its not about me training around what he’s capable of or what he’s doing, it’s more of me and what I always do and try to enforce my will on my opponent and get myself to be the best martial artist I possibly can be and that should make me and my fight game to much for him to handle.”
After a run of decision victories, we asked Fitch if he was looking to make a statement in this one and finish Thiago off before it went to the judges:
“I’m always trying to finish fights, some guys are just better at surviving than others. My last fight with Gono, I threw everything but the kitchen sink at him and he’s such a veteran that he’s just hard to finish. He’s been fighting for fifteen years and he’s been finished four times. It’s a tall order to finish someone off like that. A lot of people don’t understand how easy it is to survive when that’s your mentality going into the fight. But yeah, in order for me to get back into a prime spot, a sooner title match with GSP or whoever has the belt, I think I need some better finishes.”
When asked whether training with two other top welterweights at American Kickboxing Academy has hindered his title hopes by limiting his potential opponents, Fitch said:
“No, because we face each other every single day, we fight every single day. Not that many guys at the top level get that kind of exposure to top level fighters and we get that every single day. As far as limiting goes, we’re not the ones that choose who gets the title fights anyway, that goes to the UFC brass, they’re the ones who make those decisions so our say really has nothing to do about it. If we’re going to make a voice for getting a title shot it’s needs to be done in the cage and that’s the fairest way to do it.”
