Dan Hardy
Dan Hardy Interview
MMABay sat down this week with Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy, fresh from his triumphant outing at UFC 99 in Cologne, Germany against Marcus Davis. We asked Dan about his performance on Saturday, whether the feud with Davis is really over and what’s next for one of the most talented Brits in MMA today.
Quotes from the interview:
When asked about when he felt the tide began to turn in his favour, Hardy said:
“I think it was the elbow in the first round that I landed, just before the end. I discussed it with my team mates before the fight and we said we’d sacrifise the first round to slow him down a little bit because Marcus stops the majority of his opponents in the first round and as the fight goes on the possibility of him catching me with a sub or a knockout start to diminish. So I was willing to give up the first round in order to win the second and third which I feel I did comfortably.”
“Watching the first round, although he got the takedown and got to mount, I did escape the mount and I managed to get back to top position and as we stood up I landed that clean elbow and I think that was the most damaging shot of the round and I think that’s when the tides turned in my favour and after that I could have stepped it up a bit I think but looking back I was being a little bit reserved because of the pressure on me from the fight.”
“It was a good fight, I was pretty happy with it but I do feel there was a lot more I could have done. I started to be a lot more effective in the second round and certainly the third round I started to land some more damaging shots as well.”
When asked if he was surprised by the split decision, Hardy said:
“I was a little bit yeah but looking back at it I can see why the third round was scored to him by one of the judges. It was because of the slip at the start of the round. I threw a kick and he caught my leg and threw a punch at the same time and at a different angle it could have looked like he caught me with it, but it was just a slip and from what I can gather two judges saw it as a slip and the other saw it as a knockdown so I think that’s where the discrepancy came in with the scoring.”
