Lorenzo Fertitta says Frank Mir going to Strikeforce is a one-off
UFC co-owner, Lorenzo Fertitta has been speaking about the decision to send former heavyweight champion, Frank Mir over to Strikeforce for one fight before the year is out, explaining you shouldn’t get your hopes up of seeing this become a regular occurrence as this is a one-off.
Speaking via ESPN.co.uk, Fertitta said:
“You’re not going to see more of it. This is a one-time situation. It was a situation where Cormier had to fight one more time for Showtime. All the Strikeforce heavyweights had come to the UFC and that didn’t leave us with a stable of guys. We wanted to put on a very relevant fight that is credible.”
“We had to talk to Fox about it and because Cormier is coming to the UFC after this last fight, we could go ahead and give him that fight. Cormier is the real deal and he’s going to be fighting a guy with incredible pedigree. If Frank Mir wins, he’s all of a sudden back in the mix. From his perspective it was a good thing, otherwise he had to get in the back of the line.”
Mir has looked impressive of late, piling on the pounds to make a devastating run at the world title once again. Wins over Roy Nelson, Mirko Cro Cop and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira secured him a title shot but he fell at the final hurdle when he was pounded out by Junior dos Santos. Stay tuned to MMABay for more build-up to this one as we get it.
