UFC on FOX 4: Shogun vs. Vera results, updates and live play-by-play TONIGHT on MMABay!!!

MMABay will be coming to you LIVE from Los Angeles, California, tonight, the scene of UFC on FOX 4, in order to bring you all the action from the Staples Center where former UFC light heavyweight champion, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua takes on veteran, Brandon Vera in the main event of the evening.

Tune in and check out our round-by-round updates and official results starting at approximately 5.30pm ET (2.30pm PT/10.30 midnight UK).

We’ll be covering the entire card, top-to-bottom, from the co-main event clash between former light heavyweight champion, Lyoto Machida and Ryan Bader to the preliminary card battle between John Moraga and Ulysses Gomez. UFC on FOX 4 play-by-play live main card commentary:

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Brandon Vera (205-pound division limit)

Round one: Body kick from Vera, and another. Rua catches an attempted knee and takes Vera to the ground. Rua in half-guard. Rua works the top position as he looks to pass. Rua moves to side control. Vera scrambles but Rua cuts him off and lands a knee to the body. Vera gets loose with a couple of head kicks as he gets to his feet. Vera clinches before pulling guard with a guillotine that looks tight. Rua gets free and lands a big right over the top from half-guard. Rua moves to side control again before taking the back of Vera. Rua hammers away from the back mount. Vera rides it out. MMABay scores the round 10-9 Rua.

Round two: Big left kick from Rua takes Vera to a knee. Big right hand from Rua drops Vera for a second. Vera gets back to his feet and fights back but he looks out on his feet. Slashing elbow from Vera seems to land. Nice straight left from Vera lands. Nice combination ends in a kick from Vera. The two men exchange with Vera seemingly getting the better of it. Rua secures the clinch and knees away to the body. Vera drops to a knee and Rua continues to hammer away. Vera back up and lands a head-kick. Nice right hand from Vera lands. This is crazy. Rua with a right hand, answered by Vera. Vera clinches up against the fence before dragging Rua to the ground. Rua looks exhausted. Knees to the body by Vera land. Vera seems content with staying in half-guard despite it being wide open for a pass. MMABay scores the round 10-9 Vera.

Round three: Rua seems to have gathered himself and throws himself into an attack pinning Vera on the fence.  Vera avoids the takedown and circles away. Nice leg kick from Vera lands. Knee from the clinch by Rua sees Vera drop to a knee. Rua looks to lock up a submission but abandons it. Rua wades away but Vera gets back to his feet. Nice combination from Vera lands. Vera turns up the heat once again, landing lefts, rights and kicks. Rua with the clinch and scores with the takedown. Rua looks to move to the mount but Vera has hold of the leg preventing it. Rua hammer-fists away as he looks to see out the round in the dominant position. MMABay scores the round 10-9 Rua.

Round four: Body kick from Vera. Nice knee to the body from Vera lands. Big left hook from Rua lands before pinning Vera on the fence. Knees to the body and head by Rua. Nice knee from Vera following a close trip. Low kick from Vera lands followed by an elbow. Big uppercut from Rua lands before going back to the clinch on the fence. Rua is looking to wear Vera out in this position and nick another round. Nice combination from Vera, answered by Rua. Vera drops to the canvas and Rua finally finishes him off.

Final result: Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, (T)KO, 4th round.

Lyoto Machida vs. Ryan Bader (205-pound division limit)

Round one: Side kick to the thigh by Machida. Bader with a nice flurry before getting out of range. Powerful body kick from Machida lands. Nice knee to the body from Machida. Front-kick down the middle by Machida. Nice right hand over the top from Machida lands as Bader rushes in. Bader rushes forward again and gets tagged again. Machida lands an elbow before the two clinch. They separate quickly. Bader with a flurry but nothing really lands. Body kick from Machida. MMABay scores the round 10-9 Machida.

Round two: Leg kick from Machida early. Both men land simultaneously. Bader rushes in and Machida catches him flush with a right hand. Bader drops to the canvas and Machida finishes him off.

Final result: Lyoto Machida, (T)KO, 2nd round.

Joe Lauzon vs. Jamie Varner (155-pound division limit)

Round one: Both men circle. Varner begins to get his boxing going with combinations up and down-stairs. Nice left to the body by Varner. Varner lands a couple of body kicks. Nice right hand from Varner wobbles Lauzon. Lauzon recovers and stuffs a takedown. Lauzon lands with a nice combination which seems to hurt Varner. Varner jumps in with a couple of big rights but he seems to be slowing down. Body kick from Varner lands. Big shots from Varner but Lauzon covers up nicely. Lauzon turns it up with a combination and continues to press the action. Varner lands with another body shot. Lauzon with a clean right hand hurts Varner. Varner lands a big right hand which drops Lauzon. Varner looks to finish the fight but Lauzon locks up guard and looks for an arm-bar. Lauzon gets to his knees but the bell sounds. MMABay scores the round 10-9 Varner.

Round two: Nice leg kick from Varner early. Varner with a nice combination but Lauzon covers up. Varner knocks Lauzon off balance with a leg kick. Lauzon keeps the pressure on his opponent sensing there could be a conditioning issue. Varner with a body lock but he can’t force the fight to the ground. Varner drops for a guillotine but loses it and Lauzon takes his back. Varner powers his way out of it when he was in a lot of danger. Varner still swinging for the fences. Big exchange and Lauzon gets the better of it, forcing Lauzon to the ground and landing over and over to the head. Varner gets back to his feet but Lauzon stays on him up against the fence. Lauzon drags Varner down and takes his back. Lauzon looking for the choke before moving to the mount. Lauzon looks for a choke but ends up taking the back and getting shrugged off. Varner drops elbows from above to end the round. MMABay scores the round 10-9 Lauzon.

Round three: Varner forgets his mouthpiece. Varner shoots but Lauzon stuffs it and moves away. Varner with a double leg and scores with the takedown. Lauzon looks for the sweep and both men get to their feet. Lauzon with a nice right hand rocks the head back of his opponent. Both men exchange big shots on the feet. This is anyone’s fight. Varner with a couple of elbows. Varner with the takedown but Lauzon sweeps him into a triangle. Varner tries to pull free but Lauzon adjusts and forces the tap.

Final result: Joe Lauzon, submission (triangle-choke), 3rd round.

Mike Swick vs. DaMarques Johnson (170-pound division limit)

Round one: Swick over the top with the right hand. Big right hand from Swick lands which wobbles Johnson. Another right lands from Swick but this time Johnson takes it and keeps moving forward. Johnson looks to land a combination. Johnson with a right hand as Swick moves in. Swick with a knee from the clinch but Johnson forces him to the ground. Johnson looks to land ground and pound from the guard. Swick gets back up and the two men exchange wildly, both men landing over and over. Johnson ties Swick up on the fence and trips his opponent to the ground. Johnson mounts and drops punches from above. Swick hangs in there. Johnson looks for the D’Arce and locks it up. He lets go and looks to strike. Johnson looks for the choke again but Swick escapes. Johnson keeps the pressure on from the guard. MMABay scores the round 10-9 Johnson.

Round two: Both men land right hands to begin but it’s Johnson looking the more confident right now. Swick catches a kick and dumps Johnson to his back. Swift ground and pound from Swick turns out Johnson’s lights.

Final result: Mike Swick, (T)KO, 2nd round.

UFC on FOX 4 play-by-play live preliminary card commentary:

Cole Miller vs. Nam Phan (145-pound division limit)

Round one: Miller looks to use his size and reach with his jab. Phan goes to the body as he looks to change the early momentum. Miller continues to use his range as he looks to keep it off the fence. Phan lands a couple of left hooks. Miller looks to counter but is caught again. Right hand over the top from Phan. Another nice combination from Phan lands. Miller fires back. Phan continues to be the aggressor and gets off with yet more combinations. MMABay scores the round 10-9 Phan.

Round two: The two men exchange kicks to begin the second. Flurry from both men but nothing significant lands. Nice combination from Phan, answered by a right hand from Miller. Phan puts together a combination. Miller with a solid one-two. No hint of a takedown attempt by either man at this point. Big combination by Phan as he lands a body shot before two punches to the jaw. Couple of solid rights from Miller. Leg kick lands from Phan. The two continue to exchange, this time Phan getting the better of it. MMABay scores the round 10-9 Miller.

Round three: Phan with a nice combination to begin including a left hook which wobbles Miller. Phan continues to press forward, landing at will. Phan misses with a head-kick. Phan pushes forward again with punches. Miller looks for a takedown but Phan easily stuffs it. The two exchange. Phan is punishing the body as the fight goes on. Both men land simultaneous left hooks. Both men exchange with Miller looking to land a flying knee. Miller lands a bunch of late punches and kicks. MMABay scores the round 10-9 Phan.

Final result: Nam Phan, split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).

Phil Davis vs. Wagner Prado (205-pound division limit)

Round one: Prado comes out stalking Davis. Nice left hook from Prado lands, and another. Prado is poked in the eye by Davis and we’ll have a brief stoppage. The referee waves the fight off incredibly after consulting the doctor. Prado is very upset.

Final result: No-contest (eye poke).

Josh Grispi vs. Rani Yahya (145-pound division limit)

Round one: Yahya shoots in but gets caught by big punches from Grispi. Yahya manages to get the fight to the ground at the second time of asking and pounds away. Yahya passes to side control but Grispi surprisingly recovers guard. Yahya passes again to side control. Yahya looks to move to north-south and locks up the choke. Grispi taps.

Final result: Rani Yahya, submission (north-south-choke), 1st round.

Phil De Fries vs. Oli Thompson (265-pound division limit)

Round one: Thompson takes the center of the octagon and catches De Fries with a right hand. The two exchange positions up against the cage as they attempt to get each other to the ground. The referee separates them. De Fries presses Thompson up against the fence again before getting turned around. De Fries drags the fight to the ground but Thompson is quickly back up. The two continue to exchange positions up against the cage as the crowd gets restless. The referee separates them again. Nice leg kick from Thompson. De Fries ties Thompson up again up against the fence. Flurry from De Fries before the bell. MMABay scores the round 10-9 De Fries.

Round two: De Fries is looking to land punches at the end of his range but eats a knee from Thompson to the body. De Fries lands a nice punch which drops Thompson. De Fries looks to finish but Thompson covers up and manages to survive. Thompson back to his feet. De Fries pins Thompson against the fence. The two separate and De Fries lands a nice knee. De Fries manages to drag the fight to the ground and takes the back of Thompson. De Fries hammers away from behind, keeping the pressure on his opponent. De Fries secures the hooks and looks for the choke. He gets it.

Final result: Phil De Fries, submission (rear-naked choke). 2nd round.

Manny Gamburyan vs. Michihiro Omigawa (145-pound division limit)

Round one: Omigawa circles Gamburyan who takes the center of the octagon. Leg kick from Gamburyan lands. Flying knee from Gamburyan lands but Omigawa brushes it off. Omigawa with a nice left drops Gamburyan to a knee but the fight is soon back standing. Big right from Gamburyan, soon followed by a body shot. Omigawa starts to open up but fails to land anything significant. The two men land decent shots before Gamburyan looks for a takedown. Omigawa steps away from it. MMABay scores the round 10-9 Omigawa.

Round two: Omigawa pushes forward but eats lefts and rights. Omigawa is the one pressing the action early in this second round. Gamburyan looks for a takedown but Omigawa defends nicely including using a choke. Gamburyan stays on him and eventually scores with a single leg. Omigawa back to his feet but Gamburyan slams him right back down. Omigawa pops up once again. Nice knees from Gamburyan before dragging his opponent to the ground and takes the back. Gamburyan gives up the back but winds up in the guard of his opponent. Omigawa back up once again and steps away from the clinch up against the fence. Low kick from Omigawa lands. Head kick from Gamburyan is blocked. MMABay scores the round 10-9 Gamburyan.

Round three: Big head kick from Gamburyan lands which wobbles Omigawa. Gamburyan pushes forward looking for the finish and lands another big shot. Omigawa somehow recovers and a minute in is the one pressing the action. Omigawa starts to light Gamburyan up whilst having him pinned against the fence. Gamburyan looks to be tiring after trying to finish the fight earlier in the round. Gamburyan clinches and looks for the takedown. He gets it but Omigawa is soon back to his feet. This time Omigawa drops to his back looking for a choke but Gamburyan escapes. Both men back to the feet but Gamburyan slams Omigawa back to the ground. Again Omigawa gets to his feet and again Gamburyan slams the Japanese fighter. Omigawa regains his feet and looks for a neck crank. Both men back up and Gamburyan again looks for the head kick. MMABay scores the round 10-9 Gamburyan.

Final result: Manny Gamburyan, unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27).

John Moraga vs. Ulysses Gomez (125-pound division limit)

Round one: Both men are tentative on the feet to begin before landing leg kicks. Big right from Moraga before clinching and throwing the knees to the body. Nice leg kick from Moraga buckles Gomez. Gomez is cut. Moraga continues to land kicks to the legs and body as he punishes Gomez. Gomez catches a leg and looks to take the fight to the ground but fails to do so. Big combination by Moraga up against the fence including an uppercut sees Gomez drop to the canvas. It’s all over.

Final result: John Moraga, (T)KO, 1st round.
