Junior dos Santos’ coach reveals Cain Velasquez has suffered a broken hand (UPDATE)
Yuri Carlton, the coach of UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos, has revealed the Brazilian’s next opponent, Cain Velasquez, has suffered a broken hand in training this past month pushing back the rematch between the two till at least the turn of the year.
Speaking via Tatame Magazine, Carlton said:
“The fight is with Velasquez, but no definite date. It was speculated for September, but that is unreal. Velasquez is also with a broken hand, its not resolved, so I think the UFC will wait a little longer.”
Dos Santos has looked unstoppable on his way to the top of the division, defeating the likes of Fabricio Werdum, Gabriel Gonzaga and Roy Nelson. He was last seen in action at UFC 146 in May where he stopped Frank Mir in the second round with a barrage of punches. Velasquez appears to be a man on a mission after suffering his first defeat of his mixed martial arts career to dos Santos last November. He returned to action on the UFC 146 card and demolished Antonio “Big Foot” Silva in the very first round to make a statement.
UPDATE: The following statement was just made by Javier Mendez, the coach of Velasquez, to TheScore.com
“No truth. They (Dos Santos’ camp) are going by the Nevada Athletic Commission’s follow up after fights. Cain told the doc after his fight that his front knuckle was bruised and all they did was give him a slip that he needed an X-ray before being cleared. Standard commission practice is all that happened and they gave him a six-month suspension until he has his X-ray to clear him. He has no injuries other than the bruise and even sparred on Monday.”
