B.J. Penn out to prove to Tri-Star that the last loss to Georges St. Pierre was “a fluke”
Former two-division UFC champion, B.J. Penn has been giving further food for thought on why he’s decided to come out of semi-retirement to face Rory MacDonald at UFC 152 in September, and unsurprisingly it has something to do with proving himself to those who fight out of the Tri-Star gym.
Speaking via Fighters Only Magazine, Penn said:
“It would be nice to let them know it was a fluke. The fight [with Macdonald] is not going to go down the same way. Rory is not just going to walk in there and take me out and beat me up for four rounds straight and end up putting me away. I really believe that the fight is going to go different and they are going to realize that when we start fighting. This isn’t the same guy they fought that night and this is going to be a whole different thing.”
“Besides that there is no bad blood. I see Firas all the time, I see Georges. Everything is in the past. I’d like to get out there show TriStar gym and their fans [that] I’m a worthy opponent. I’m not just a guy that’s going to walk in the ring and somebody’s just gonna walk across the other side and walk across and crush me. That’s not gonna be the story.”
Penn has won just one of his last five bouts inside the octagon. His victory over Matt Hughes is his only one since December 2009, with losses coming at the hands of Frankie Edgar (twice) and Nick Diaz. Stay tuned to MMABay for more news on this situation as we get it.
