Bellator 69 – Maiquel Falcao dishes out a beating to Andreas Spang, Karl Amoussou sneaks into season final
The Bellator middleweight season six tournament ended with a rather one sided affair when former UFC stand-out, Maiquel Falcao took on plucky prospect, Andreas Spang in the main event of the evening last night at Bellator 69 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, with the Brazilian dishing out a beating from start to finish.
Spang connected early in the fight with a punch and follow up that had the Brazilian in serious trouble but Falcao wisely tied him up and took control from there. Falcao soon reversed the position and dominated the action until a mistimed knee saw the action stopped and he was deducted a point by the official. Once the action resumed Falcao was relentless, taking Spang down over and over, dodging submission attempts and hammering away from the back both to the body and head. The fight was eventually handed to Falcao 29-27, 29-27, 29-27 by the judges. After the fight the Brazilian said:
“I’ve got the best gym in the world. I’ve got the best grappling coach in the world; there’s no way I can’t get better. I want to dedicate this fight to all the Bellator staff who believed in me.”
In the other big fight on the card Karl Amoussou survived a late scare from David Rickels to reach the welterweight tournament final via split decision. Amoussou looked to be in control for much of the first and second rounds, only to be completely dominated by Rickels in the third, resulting in a badly swollen left eye. The judges handed him the fight 28-29, 29-28, 29-28 via split decision. After the fight he said:
“I think he won the third, I think I won the first, and the second was really close. I would like to really congratulate David. He really earned my respect. David, I’m really sorry for you for the decision.”
In other action on the main card female mixed martial artist, Jessica Aguilar picked up a surprise unanimous decision win over Megumi Fujii (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) and heavyweight prospect, Mark Holata picked up a first round Achilles lock submission win over former “Ultimate Fighter” cast member, Abe Wagner.
