Anderson Silva explains the reason behind “The Spider” nickname
UFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva has been speaking about the origins of his nickname “The Spider”, explaining it came from a female announcer who thought he looked like a superhero in the ring.
Speaking via Veja.abril.com.br, Silva said:
“Before a fight, I was wearing a shirt with Spiderman on it when an announcer came up and joked that I looked like the superhero on the shirt. To my surprise, when I entered the ring, she announced: ‘Anderson Silva, Brazil’s Spiderman.’”
Silva takes on fellow Brazilian, Vitor Belfort at next month’s UFC 126 event in Las Vegas, Nevada, a fight that could finally put to bed who is the best middleweight in the world. “The Spider” has already expressed an interest in facing Michael Bisping down the road in the UK, although Yushin Okami is next in line for a shot at the title.
