Nate Diaz targets top-three opponent in the lightweight or welterweight divisions
“Ultimate Fighter” season five winner, Nate Diaz continued his resurgence up the UFC ranks this past weekend with an impressive third round submission win over Marcus Davis at UFC 118 in Boston, Massachusetts, and now he wants to kick it up a notch.
Speaking this past weekend following the fight, Diaz said:
“Whatever they want to do with me, I’m fine. I’d like to get someone in the top three contenders at either lightweight or welterweight rather than against some tough guy that’s not as popular or not as high in the rankings. I want to try and get a belt here sometime.”
“I’d like to fight Gray before he gets a title shot if that would be possible. I don’t think he did too much against me.”
At that point UFC President, Dana White intervened by saying:
“That’s not possible right now. That would suck for Gray. That would be twice in a row that we did that to him and that’s not going to happen.”
Diaz took the unusual step of moving up in weight following three losses in four fights in the lightweight division, including a loss to Gray Maynard at the start of the year. He’s since rebounded with back-to-back wins over Rory Markham and now Marcus Davis, proving he’s got his eye on more than one UFC title.
