WEC 50 – Chad Mendes picks up one-sided decision win over Cub Swanson at The Pearl
Undefeated WEC featherweight, Chad Mendes picked up the biggest win of his career to date tonight, defeating dangerous veteran, Cub Swanson at WEC 50 in a rather one-sided decision.
Slow start from both men before Mendes shoots in and takes Swanson down to the ground. Mendes moves to side control but can do very little as Swanson ties him up. After a prolonged spell of non-activity the referee stands the pair back up. Swanson throws a kick but it’s caught and Mendes takes him down once again. Mendes lets him back up and starts to get the better of the striking. Swanson attempts a flying knee but it’s caught and he’s dumped to the ground.
Swanson comes out swinging in the second, throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Mendes but nothing lands significantly. After ducking numerous shots, Mendes shoot in and puts Swanson on his back. Swanson does a good job of tying Mendes up except for the odd elbow. Swanson attempts a guillotine and uses it to stand but the time runs out to do any damage once vertical.
Mendes with an early takedown this time but Swanson wall-walks his way back to his feet. Swanson lands a nice left hook but once again Mendes puts him on his back. Swanson looks for an omoplata before giving it up. Mendes secures the mount only for a second before Swanson quickly recovers guard. Swanson back to his feet with a minute left and looks immediately for a flying knee. Mendes catches him and dumps him to the ground. Mendes allows Swanson to stand before shooting in and riding out the rest of the round. The judges scored the bout in favour of Mendes, 30-27, 29-28, 29-28.
