UFC middleweight, Jason MacDonald on recovery and his return to the octagon
UFC middleweight Jason MacDonald (24-14 MMA, 5-6 UFC) has this week been cleared to restart his training after suffering a broken tibula, dislocated ankle and some serious ligament damage against John Salter at UFC 113.
It was a high price to pay for stepping in on short notice, even more so because it was MacDonalds second shot with the UFC after being released by the promotion after picking up back to back losses at The Ultimate Fighter 8 and UFC 97.
Speaking via MMAJunkie.com, MacDonald spoke about having two three inch screws removed from his ankle this week and his potential return before 2010 is out.
“The doctor made an incision and stuck a screwdriver in there, the first four or five turns of that screw was unbelievably painful. As a fighter, I’m obviously eager to get back in there, and from a financial standpoint I’ve been laid off for a while, and I’d like to get back to fighting and making some money,”
“But at this point in my career, especially since I just signed a new contract with the UFC and then the injury happened – and regardless of how the fight was going it was still considered a loss – it’s important for me to be 100 percent when I return to the UFC.”
The Canadian had his UFC contract ‘froze’ during his recovery, but he is still a UFC fighter and that is all the motivation he needs to heal up and get back to work. MacDonald said he would ideally like to return in December, but it depends on how his recovery progresses.
