Reed Harris reveals the winner of the Jamie Varner vs. Kamal Shalorus fight could get a title shot
WEC General Manager, Reed Harris has revealed that the winner of the WEC 49 main event between Jamie Varner and Kamal Shalorus will likely get the next shot at lightweight champion, Benson Henderson, and one man already with the bit between himself is the man from Arizona.
Speaking via MMAFighting.com, Harris said:
“Absolutely, that is the reason we put this fight together. Both of these guys had been at the top of the food chain in the 155lb division for us. I think both of these guys are definitely in contention, and winning this fight could put them in that No. 1 spot.”
Varner as it happened chipped in on the rivalry he has with current champion and the last man to defeat him, Benson Henderson, admitting there’s a score to settle between the two.
“I really feel like that guy hit the lottery when he got me in that guillotine to be honest with you. I’m really looking forward to getting through this fight with Kamal, and no matter what happens I hope I get another shot cause the kid always like to claim that he’s from Arizona, it’s a little bit a territorial thing. He tries to claim that he’s from my home state, and the kid’s from Washington. It’s just funny.”
“He doesn’t have that decision making power, and I think Shane Roller said it best, and I think Ben knows, it’s a little bit of fear to be honest with you, me and Shane both know, you don’t shoot in on that guy. You don’t give that guy your neck and you win that fight.”
The lightweight division is currently being dominated by current champion, Benson Henderson, knocking off long time title rivals, Donald Cerrone and Jamie Varner in quick succession. Will we have time for another round of fights between these three before the division is swallowed up by the UFC? Stay tuned to MMABay to find out.
