DREAM 15 – Alistair Overeem and Gegard Mousasi tentatively planned for July 10th event
Strikeforce heavyweight champion, Alistair Overeem, former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, Gegard Mousasi and Dutch heavy hitter, Melvin Manhoef have all been tentatively arranged to participate in the July 10th event although no opponents have been confirmed.
A light heavyweight grand prix was expected to take place at DREAM 14, with an eight man tournament. However, DREAM officials revealed DREAM 15 will host the opening round of the grand prix, with only a four man tournament. MMAJunkie.com recently reported that Gegard Mousasi will compete in the Japanese organisations light heavyweight grand prix.
Mousasi lost his Strikeforce light heavyweight title to Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal via unanimous decision at Strikeforce: Nashville in April. Before that though, the Dutch-Armenian fighter put together a fifteen fight win streak spanning several promotions.
Newly crowned Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem will also feature on the card. The Dutchman won the Strikeforce heavyweight championship back in 2007 with a submission win over Paul Buentello but spent the next three years fighting predominately in DREAM. He finally defended his title against Brett Rogers at Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery in May 2010 and won via technical knockout.
Aggressive puncher Melvin Manhoef suffered a knockout loss to Gokhan Saki at last weekend’s “It’s Showtime 2010 Amsterdam” and hasn’t competed since a knockout loss to Robbie Lawler at January’s Strikeforce: Miami.
DREAM 15 will take place on July 10th in Saitama, Japan and is expected to be broadcast live in North America. For more news on this event and all future DREAM events, stay tuned to MMABay.
