UFC on Versus – Brandon Vera on Jon Jones: “I couldn’t care less about his takedowns”
UFC light heavyweight stand-out, Brandon Vera has explained that he’s not worried in the slightest about the unorthodox takedowns that Jon Jones has in his arsenal ahead of tonight’s fight in Broomfield, Colorado, as well as saying it will be interesting to see if the young fighter can handle the pressure of a stand-up war.
Speaking via GracieMag.com, Vera said:
“He’s a great fighter for sure, he has many qualities and I like his standup game, but I couldn’t care less about his takedowns. I hope he uses his boxing this fight; I’d love to throw down with him. I want to see if he can take the pressure.”
“Jiu-Jitsu is fundamental in my game. If your Jiu-Jitsu’s no good, you’ll spend the whole time worrying about getting taken down… People talk a lot about my standup game, but they might not realize that my performance on my feet is good because I’m not worried about the guy taking me down. I’m really happy and satisfied with my Jiu-Jitsu; it’s a really important weapon and makes me more confident and calm should the fight hit the ground.”
Vera will be looking for the kind of win and performance that would put him back in the title hunt after losing a controversial decision to Randy “The Natural” Couture at UFC 105 in November. Can “The Truth” rebound and back-up all his talk when the two men meet later tonight?
