WEC 47 – Garcia, Roop, Pettis and Benavidez pick up $10,000 extra
The customary fight bonuses were handed out tonight at the post fight press conference in Columbus, Ohio following WEC 47 with a number of high profile fighters going home $10,000 better off.
The “Fight of the Night” bonus went to the back and forth split draw preliminary fight between Leonard Garcia and George Roop. Both men threw the kitchen sink at each other in this one, slugging it out on the feet before exchanging submission attempts to the ground. After Roop was deducted a point for an illegal low blow muddied the waters, the judges scored the bout 29-27, 27-29, 28,28 on the night. Both men pocketed an extra $10,000 on top of their salaries.
“Knockout of the Night” went to another preliminary card, Anthony Pettis for his first round head kick finish against Danny Castillo. The shot was followed up by a flurry of punches but it was already over before his opponent hit the mat. “Submission of the Night” went to co-main event star, Joseph Benavidez who submitted former champion, Miguel Torres in the second round with a guillotine choke to pick up the biggest win of his career to date. Both Pettis and Benavidez pick up a cool $10,000 for their efforts.
